The 2015 West African University Games, (WAUG) has eventually come to
an end. The games ended on Sturday, 24th October, 2015 with a closing
Football match played between Enugu State University(ESUT) and
University of Calabar (UNICAL).
The University of Nigeria (UNN) male football team started the competition on a high note, beating the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) team 1-0 in the opening match. The UNN team went ahead to beat Benue State University, Kano State University of Science & Tech, and the Nassarawa State University teams but were stopped in the Semi-finals by the Enugu State University (ESUT) team who went on to clinch gold in the male football competition after beating their final opponent and runner up, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) team. Final score at the end of the game was 1-0 in favour of ESUT.
The UNN male football team settled for bronze by beating their opponent, the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) team, in the 3rd place match played earlier on the game’s final day.
Team UNN however emerged overall winners in the tournament after winning gold in both Female football and female hockey championships. Other winners at the 2015 West African University Games are the University of Ibadan(Female Hockey Silver Medalists), University of Education, Winneba, Ghana(Female Hockey Bronze Medalists), Obafemi Awolowo University(Male Hockey Gold Medalists), University of Maiduguri(Male Hockey Silver Medalists), Federal University of Technology Minna(Male Hockey Bronze Medalists).
Team UNN’s Obot Obonabasi took home the award for highest goal scorer in the football competition, having scored a total of 6 goals in the tournament, and also won the award for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. The football fair play award went to the Bayero University Kano (BUK) team.
