The Kaduna State Government has approved a career enhancement programme for teachers in the state and has included teachers among categories of workers that can rise to Grade Level 17. According to the state government, teachers who were able to achieve this level will be referred to as Director-Tutors and they would be expected to focus on specific subjects in secondary schools.
Dr Shehu Usman Adamu , Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, in a statement, said this move was to fulfill Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s promise that teachers can achieve the highest level without having to discontinue teaching.
“The retention of these experienced teachers would help in raising standards in public secondary schools in the state”, he said. Adamu added that plans to bring this decision to fruition began in 2015 when Balarabe Abbas Lawal , the Secretary to the State Government, notified the Head of Service that the government has approved the extension of the terminal grade for teachers from Grade Level 16 to Grade Level 17.
The commissioner also mentioned that six science secondary schools are to be built in Kaduna State as the Kaduna State Executive Council had approved the six sites for the schools, which are to be financed by a USD17.3 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
