Defination Of Catchment Area: A catchment area is the area and population from which a city or individual service attracts visitors or customers. For example, a school catchment area is the geographic area from which students are eligible to attend a local school (Wikipedia, ).
This means that students from catchment areas get preference treatments over those from other states during admission. Note that students will still be admitted on merit but there slots reserved for students from catchment areas. They have different cut-off marks for admission and if they are met, they are admitted over applicants from other states.
Let me demonstrate the so called university catchment area here, supposing Obinna and Gladys sat for 2014 UTME examination held last year, Obinna scored 270 while Gladys scored 220 both applied to study Medicine in UNIBEN. Meanwhile Obinna came from Enugu state while Gladys is a native of Edo state. And after the Post-UTME screening test, the two candidates scored 90 and 50 receptively. and at the end when the Merit admission list is released glady’s name shows up on the list while obinna’s name is no were to be found on the list.
I know lots of people might think that it was a miracle. well i also believe in miracle but we all also know that heaven help those who help themselves.
But in this case i must tell you all that miracle is out of it but UNIVERSITY CATCHMENT AREA POLICY is in Action the most painful part of the story is that the university did not even consider admitting the young man into any other medical related course like pharmacy all because of the catchment policy. Quote me.
Graduating from UNN is not a guarantee of becoming the best medical doctor in Nigeria . Time they said wait for NO man. Do not choose UNN just because you friend choose the university as his or her choice but try and make your research well before diving into any university.
What i am saying in essence is these, There are factors you have to consider before choosing any university as your choice which are:
1: Can i be able to score above the general cut-off mark?
2: Does this university consider second choice candidates?
3: Where are their Catchment Areas?
5: Is there any thing like official Admission fees into Law/ Medicine?
Those are some factors to be considered before making a choice.
