Today another set of Corp members will be passing out of the Compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps scheme.
The NYSC was established by the regime of General Yakubu Gowon via decree 24 of 1973 and later modified by the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida through decree 51 of 1993 to inculcate in Nigerian youths the spirit of selfless service to the community and to promote oneness and unity in a nation of diverse cultures, economic and social backgrounds.
These youths, who left the comfort of their homes to serve their father’s land, what hopes lies in the future for them?
Unemployment among the agile and virile youth in Nigeria has made our youth vulnerable to social inequalities, making them a tool for destruction and destabilization of the peace of the nation . The future of any country lies in its youths. The NYSC scheme which ought to be a nurturing ground in preparing the youth corps members for the challenges ahead in the society has failed as graduates now see it as a waste of time. The NYSC needs total overhaul and revamping to meet present day needs and national issues.
Entrepreneurship and national integration should be more focused upon by the NYSC, not just on paper but in actions and implementation. The government should figure out a certain percentage of corp members in each batch for automatic employment into its ministries, departments and agencies on all levels of government. This will boost the confidence, commitment and patriotism of the corps members in the service of their father's land.
Also, the government should give easier access to loan which will be interest free for those who are interested in starting up their own businesses instead.
I plead with the government to use the NYSC scheme to create jobs for the youth by also creating a conducive environment for the private sector to grow so that our youth can be gainfully employed.
To my dear distinguished corp members who have served these great country diligently and faithfully, it’s a great privilege serving one's country as it’s an avenue to have practical knowledge about the country and its hidden potentials. As you are passing out today, always remember you are an ambassador of this great country, your actions, words and attitude either contribute to the rising or sinking of the country; be a proud ambassador and Nigeria will be a better place for all.
Long Live NYSC
Long Live Nigeria Youth
