In a purported move by the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the University status accorded to some Federal Colleges of Education, students of Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri) have staged a protest condemning the action.

A source told Post Nigeria that the students with placards caused heavy traffic as they marched toward the Imo State Government House to register their grievances.
When Post Nigeria contacted Dr A.F. Mohammed of Federal College of Education, Zaria (now Federal University of Education, Zaria) if the school was also affected in the reversal, he stated that the Government was making such plan.
“As I speak, there is an attempt to reverse it, but it won’t stand. It is forward ever, backward never.
“Our leaders are in Abuja right now sorting things out,’’ he added.
The Federal Executive Council on May 20 had approved the conversion of four Federal Colleges of Education to universities.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the council, presided over by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The affected colleges of education as Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (now Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo); Federal College of Education, Zaria (now Federal University of Education, Zaria); Federal College of Education, Kano (now Federal University of Education, Kano); and Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri).
