What are your expectation as an NYSC corp member?
Many at times, our expectations are high, we hope to serve at a place where we could probably get a job after serving or be exposed to a working experience or at least get exposure to job opportunity. This is why state like Lagos, Rivers and Abuja are usually in high demand.
If you fall into this category of person, well I myself  hoped for such. But that in most cases is not usually how it turns out.
If you ask me to describe my service year in one word, I would say “FUN”. Yeah fun, plus I learnt a lot having fun.I served in Delta state. A beautiful state I would say. I was happy to see lots of my course mate at the Issele ukwu camp. In the camp there are lots of activities and I had my mind set to have the maximum experience achievable there. What do I mean: I had good booze at the mammi market even with the soldier, I did not miss any of the morning jogging and the heart lifting song sang by each platoon as they match, I gave up MDGs to join my platoon in match parade, I participated in the Drama and in cooking. So outright I enjoyed myself very much at the camp. One more thing I did not mention I went through all the rope climbing jungle exercise although being a batch B, the rain disrupted the day my platoon was to do this but the next day I wore my khaki and join another platoon to complete mine. loll. I practically did every thing, I would have gone for Mr Macho is I had pop up muscles! lol.
There are also something I did not enjoy in the camp.
  1. It rained like all the time
  1. There was not enough sit so I stood to take most of the boring lectures.
  1. You have to charge your phone at the mammi market or sneak in extension to charge your phone
  1. Sometime we don’t have water, so you have to queue up to get water and sometime you don’t get to take a bath.
  1. Sometime, you cant just go with the food cook, you have to get your own food
  1. The khaki was of a very low quality poorly sown that you have to go work on it after its given you plus I could get my shoes size in the white can type, so I had to were jungle booth all through
  1. The toilet was a mess
well if you served in southern Nigeria, this condition will not be news to you. I really don’t know how it was in northern Nigeria.

*** I had to pay 20k to get posted to warri. I had arranged with a friend trusting his words to get me a company in warri where I would serve………….Now you would be wondering if my plan worked, did I get posted to warri? did I get to serve in a company? …….on the last day after the parade which I participated in, we all crowed to get our placement letter. My friend got his first and it was warri, I was happy because since his worked, mine should also work. I was happy to collect mine, but when I looked at it. It was Obiaruku, now I don’t have an idea where Obiaruku was, I was hoping it was somewhere in Warri, but it was not, it was in ukwuani local govt. Area not warri. did I get my 20k back. No, I did not get my money back. It was gone for good. There was a bus to take me to Obiaruku, I was sad, because I lost my money and could not get to warri. But thanks to the girls that busted into crying and couldn’t stop the tears flowing, no offense to the ladies but it actually got me amused, how easily they could cry. I had to do the consoling. To cut this story short. I had the best time in Obiaruku, not because obiaruku had the best things but because I set my mind to make the best of it and to never be sad. Just like Brian Tracy would say “you are only as happy as you have made up your mind to me” . Money cannot make a man happy but money can make a happy man happier. I did achieve a lot in Obiaruku:
1. I LEARNT HOW TO SWIM. Obiaruku is where Delta state trains their swimmers, so I join them and I learnt to swim. I can do the free style and back stroke.
2. I joined the Choir in my church, I got to know the different parts and became pretty good in tenure
3. I read lot of motivational books and business/entrepreneurship related book. This was awesome this really help me a lot. The lesson I learnt from this books changed the way I think, help me develop myself and help to speed up my acquiring a Job after service. I will take this time out to recommend this books : I will recommend all Brian Tracy books, start with “success is a journey” and “create your own future”, “rich dad poor dad” and “cash from quadrant” both by Robert kiyosaki, the richest man in Babylon etc. I now have a routine of reading a motivational book bimonthly
  1. 4.  I was able to team up with other NACC corp member to secure an NACC family house with the help of the church
  1. 5. I did a safety course with NISP in warri.
  1. 6. I was able to impact knowledge into life of student who were willing to learn giving them career and moral advise, and they still call me through phone till today.
7.I discovered Obiaruku has the best palm wine you can get any where and a very cheap prize
  1. 8. God blessed me with the best of friends anyone could as for, from my fellow corp members and from Obiaruku people.

I would say that even with the annoying July rain and all other disadvantages of the Isele Ukwu Camp. I still enjoyed my self. I made the best use of it and I had no dull moment. When I head the condition of some other camp like the one in Edo state, I new mine was better of.
from the camp I learnt that what ever condition you find your self in, be grateful to God and make the best use of it, you will always come out of it victorious and smile when you remember it.
my priest one said that I man came to a town and asked an indigene what kind of people where in the land, good people of bad people. And the indigene replied him by saying that it all depends on what you want, if you are looking to see good people, then good people you will see but if you are looking to see bad people, then bad people you will see. So I have always lived my life expecting the best though prepared for the worse and the best always come through. I have lost my phone 3 time in Obiaruku and someone always brings it to me while some persons have had their phone stolen.
You cannot solve any problem by worrying about it. You can solve a problem by looking for the solution to it and praying for guidance if you have the faith. Human being are conquers , there nothing we don’t have solution to, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. We have unlimited powers, we can accomplish anything, the problem is that we never try, we stop believing we can. That why I recommend reading to change the way you think.

drop a comment if your enjoy this and write about your experience I would be happy to include it in my future write up Source
