MEET THE 20 YEAR OLD UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT WHO WON ELECTION INTO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT

Voters in Scotland have elected Mhairi Black, a final year undergraduate of politics and public policy at the Glasgow University and a candidate of the Scottish National Party into the British Parliament.

The only time a younger person had been elected into the British parliament was in 1667, when a 13 year old Christopher Monck was elected into the British parliament. This means that Black, has broken a 350 years record.

While majority of her peers in Nigeria and in most parts of Africa are yet to cast their first ballots due to their non-interest in politics and excuses of being too young to have a say in what happens, Black, who is not from a very wealthy family, opted to take the bulls by the horns, by taking the front seat in driving her country to the destination her generation desires and deserves.

It is also important to point out that Black, was not guaranteed of her family’s support in the election, as most of her family members have a long-standing history of voting for the Labour Party, but Black was not to be deterred, she matched on and defeated a powerful Labour Party incumbent, Douglas Alexander who is the shadow Foreign Minister and the campaign director for his Party.
It is disturbing to note that in our own part of the world, the few youths who attempt to contest elections are pulled down by their fellow youths, while a majority of those youths who contest elections, do not really contest to win, they contest either to be known or to be settled. Mhairi Black makes it clear to us that you can do it, you can win that election if you put in your best to it. No matter the obstacles, no matter whom you are paired against, you can defeat that person, if you do the right things and keep the right records.
CONGRATULATIONS, MS. BLACK.
BLACK
