The charade ends! Okorocha Cancels Free Education In Imo |
The political charade of the Imo State government for the past four has
come to an end. Following his 're-election'' to his last term as
governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha has cancelled the 'free'
education policy in Imo State.
Citing lack of funds for sustenance as the major reason, the governor
gave directive for the immediate stoppage of the policy across all
educational institutions in the state. Sources from the state-owned Evan
Enwerem University (formerly IMSU), told NewsDay Reporters that the
governor has given the directives as part of the condition to pay the
lecturers who had embarked on an industrial action for weeks.
NewsDay Reporters recalls that the Academic Staff Union of University,
ASUU, IMSU chapter embarked an indefinite for non-payment of lecturer's
salary for several months. Within 24 hours the lecturers called off
their strike came the news of the cancellation of the free education
policy.
Meanwhile, Governor Rochas Okorocha has also directed the VC of Imo
state university, IMSU, to comply with the directives with "immediate
effect" and start collecting tuition fees from students and prospective
students.
The government could not comment on the free education cancellation
story as calls put across to the number of the Governor’s SSA on media,
Mr. Sam Onwuemodo was not answered nor returned as at the time of filing
in this.
Okorcha has got nothing else to lose as he is about serving his last
term in office as the governor of the state. It is expected that other
Draconian decisions would follow this, as the people of the state shwoed
their distaste for his government during the elections, which he
controversially won.
