A 23-year-old final year student jumped into a canal and drowned, only two days to his graduation. It is uncertain if it was a suicide or an accident but police do not suspect foul play
A final year student of the State University of New York at Brockport (SUNY at Brockport), Brockport, has drowned after jumping into a canal.
The 23-year-old student, while in the company of two other students, reportedly jumped into the Erie Canal, which is near the university, on Sunday.
His intention was to swim but he drowned and his corpse was pulled out of the canal around 8am.
His death comes just two days before his graduation.
Officials confirmed the victim’s identity but failed to identify him at the request of his family.
An official statement published on the College’s Facebook page says the student drowned on Sunday morning.
“We are deeply saddened to inform you of a tragedy that took place this morning in the Erie Canal. An individual, who we believe to be a Brockport student, has drowned,” the statement read.
“The medical examiner’s office is currently working to identify the individual.”
Police do not suspect foul play in the case, though there were two people present when he jumped into the water.
