The story of Mary Kay Letourneau rocked America when it first broke in 1996. She was a married schoolteacher, 34 years old, and had four children when she started having an affair with her 12 year old student and got pregnant for him.
Vili Fualaau, the student in question, was only 14 when his first child was born to his abuser/lover/rapist, but even though she went to jail for over seven years after being convicted of child rape, Mary Kay and Vili got married when she was released, and are about to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.
Now, almost twenty years later, they are telling their side of the story.
This incredibly complex (and horrifying, in my opinion) situation is the sort of thing that warrants the saying, ‘truth is really stranger than fiction.’ Mary Kay is now 53, Villi 31, and their two daughters are 16 and 17 years old.
Their story was brought back to life by abc news host Barbara Walters, who will interview the couple as well as their daughters, June and Aubrey on the show, ‘American Scandal’.
