A Kado Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Wednesday
sentenced a student, Usman Yakubu, to six strokes of cane for stealing a
pair of sandals at a shop. Yakubu, who lives at Kado Estate, Abuja, was
arraigned on a charge of theft. The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, who
handed down the verdict, said Yakubu was convicted following his guilty
plea.
Sadiq warned Yakubu to shun crime after receiving his punishment, adding that if he was brought before the court again, a stiffer punishment would be imposed on him. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Idi, told the court that the offence was reported at the Gwarimpa Police Station on March 9 by Usman Abdullahi of Tipper Garage, Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja.
He said the accused entered the plaintiff’s shop in Gwarimpa and stole the sandals when he went for evening prayers in the mosque. Idi put the value of the sandals at N4, 000. He noted that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
