Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. James Epoke, on Thursday said 7,811 persons would graduate from the institution during the 28th Convocation Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Epoke, who stated this at a pre-convocation and 40th Anniversary Celebration press briefing in Calabar, said nine persons would graduate with first class honours.
He described the development as good for the institution, adding that, this was the highest number of first class recorded by the institution in the past ten years.
“This is a good development in the University because we have not had this number in the past ten years. I make bold to say that the standard of education in Nigeria is not falling but is growing higher, it depends on the individual,” Epoke said.
He also attributed the success of the students to the conducive academic environment created by his administration.
According to the VC, other graduands include 6,871 undergraduates; 391 masters; 120 Phd; and 429 Post Graduate Diplomas.
Epoke added that the administration has put in place several measures to wipe out social vices in the university with the view to making students work hard and earn their marks.
“The issue of ‘sorting’ has been reduced to the barest minimum and other social vices have also been tackled. So, now the campus is serene and you can see students hanging around the corners reading their books unmolested,” he stated.
He added that the university which was established 40 years ago has grown from the initial 120 students to over 30,000 students.
The VC also hinted that the University was doing much in the area of skills acquisition for the graduating students through its Skills Development Center.
