Applications are ongoing for the 2015 SOAS Tallow Chandlers-M. W. Beer- FOSFA Doctoral Scholarship in UK. Thanks to the generosity of the Tallow Chandlers Benevolent Fund, SOAS is pleased to offer one Tallow Chandlers -M. W. Beer- FOSFA Doctoral Scholarship in the economics of food and agriculture. The scholarship is for a first year MPhil/PhD student at SOAS doing research in the field of economics of food and agriculture who chooses a dissertation topic focusing on the oil and fats trade.
The total value of the scholarship is £15,000 to be used for tuition fees with the remainder towards maintenance. The scholarship may be renewed for the normal duration of a full time student’s registration subject to satisfactory progress. The normal duration of a full-time student’s registration for a research degree is three years. The award is therefore renewable for up to a further two years.
Scholarship Value

Selection Criteria: Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a Selection Panel consisting of three academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your application. Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statement and other relevant information.
Notification: Successful candidates will be notified by email regarding the outcome of their application, generally by the end of July.
Eligibility:
Applicants must possess or expect to be awarded a Distinction in their Masters Degree from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK degree must be in the top rank and will be assessed by their referees and transcript.
Applicants with a Merit in their Masters Degree may apply but will not be given preference. Candidates currently completing a Masters degree are welcome to apply.
- • Applicants must have also an offer of admission to the full-time department of economics in the field of economics of food and agriculture with a dissertation topic focusing on the oil and fats trade.
• Open to Home/EU and overseas applicants.
• Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2015. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
• Scholarship is open to overseas and Home/EU applicants.
Application Procedure and Deadline
You must follow two steps:
- • STEP 1: You must apply for this scholarship via the on-line scholarship application form.
• STEP 2: In addition to the online scholarship application, applicants must also submit a complete on-line application for admission. A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV, research proposal and a personal statement.
The panel will be considering your scholarship application Together with your online application for admission. Please note that complete application for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
